Percentage Calculation for Catalog Summary

Learn how Duration and Average Time Spent are interpreted and calculated in the Catalog Summary report.

The percentage calculations in the Catalog Summary help understand learner engagement and whether the course duration aligns with actual learning behavior.

Duration and Average Time Spent

When General is selected in the Catalog Summary report, the following values are displayed:

  • Duration: The total course duration provided by the course provider.
  • Average Time Spent: The average time learners spend on the course, expressed as a percentage of the total course duration.

Example Calculation

Consider a course with a total duration of 5 hours.

  • Learner 1: Spent 2 hours on the course.
  • Learner 2: Spent 3 hours on the course.

Step 1: Calculate the average time spent.

Average Time Spent = (2 + 3) ÷ 2 = 2.5 hours

Step 2: Calculate the percentage of the course duration.

Average Time Spent (%) = (Average Time Spent ÷ Total Course Duration) × 100

= (2.5 ÷ 5) × 100 = 50%

On average, learners spend 50% of the total course duration on the course.
